About Auburn

Auburn, NY was firsted settled in 1793 and maned “Hardenbergh’s Corners.” Known since 1805 as “Auburn,” it has become a city rich in culture, arts, and history.

Auburn is home to many historic sites. Harriet Tubman, the American abolitionist, humanitarian, and spy, owned a home in Auburn and used it as a haven for family, friends, and other African Americans looking for a better life in the North. Tubman purchased her land from William H. Seward, Secretary of State under Presidents Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson, who was also opposed to slavery. Seward and his wife, Frances, opened their home as a safe house to slaves traveling on the Underground Railroad. Seward’s house is now a museum, and both his and Tubman’s homes are on the National Register of Historic Places.

Modern Auburn offers a wide array of things to do. The Auburn Doubledays, a minor-league baseball team, plays in the city and “The Great Race,” an annual, multi-sport relay race, attracts thousands of participants. The Finger Lakes Musical Theatre Festival occurs in the summer and showcases on- and off-Broadway musicals until the early fall. Restaurants ranging from fine dining to bar food can be found throughout the city, offering the chance to please any palate. The Highland Park Golf Club is the perfect place to practice your swings with its challenging Par 71, 18-hole course that stretches over 6,400 yards.
